Usually, I'm one to have a song grow on me, only really getting into it after a few listens. But, on rare occasion, I fall in love after just one play. As for "Von dutch", baby I was living before Charli even reached the chorus.

I'm a sucker for a juicy synth and something about this sound just scratched an itch in my brain. The killer production was no surprise considering EASYFUN produced it, the same producer who blessed us with "Speed Drive" from Barbie last summer. I am so hoping to see more of him on Charli’s upcoming album, Brat, because whenever they're together it's a guaranteed serve.

"Von dutch" and the rest of Brat represent a new era for Charli, a step away from the conventional pop of her last album, Crash, and an embrace of the experimental, electronic sound we’ve always loved her for. The song is catchy and club-ready, asking listeners to let go and party (I’d expect nothing less from the party girl herself).

She opens the song, "it's okay to just admit that you're jealous of me," and follows up with mentions of "cult classic" and the, dare I say, bratty refrain "I'm your number one, it's so obvious." Charli's message is simple. She's a bad bitch. She's an icon. She's a cult classic, and she's number one. She knows it, you know it, everyone knows it. (It's so obvious.)

The wild, bratty, bad-bitch energy is also exuded by the song’s music video, where Charli sports long curls, a ripped v-neck, and no pants while dancing, running, climbing, and sliding around an airport. She hitches a ride on many a moving machine and even jumps off the wing of plane. The camera shots are frantic, oftentimes the camera person is moving just as chaotically as Charli. Oh, and she attacks the camera a few times too.

Every aspect of the music video evokes feelings of reckless fun, confidence, and idgaf-ism which seem to be defining features of Brat. I am in love with the sound, visuals, and theme of this new era so far, and I’m hopeful the album rollout is only going up from here.

And for a queer connection, I’m sure Charli’s LGBTQ-saturated fanbase isn’t too disappointed to see her making more electronic club bangers. (Not too disappointed as in Twitter went feral.)
